The Lake Isle of Innisfree is a tiny little unassuming Island, literally little more than a stone throw from the shores Lough Gill near Slish Wood. Densely covered in trees and scrub, completely uninhabited this speck of land nonetheless gave rise to one of literatures greatest poems of displacement and longing for home.
W B Yeats wrote the Lake Isle of Innisfree while living on “the pavements grey” of London. The poem speaks of his longing to return to Sligo where he had spent so much of his early childhood, the county that inspired so much of his poetry.
That such an insignificant island could inspire such timeless art inspired Martina to create this Lake Isle of Innisfree collection. The liquid like contours etched into the face of each piece follows the outline shape of Lough Gill. The tiny green stone is placed where the Lake Isle of Innisfree is located.
