Black Hen Designs hails from Lisacul in County Roscommon, Ireland. Husband and wife, Andrew and Vida are the creative duo behind the Black Hen Designs name. Originally from the UK, Andrew and Vida, who is a native of Lisacul created the company in 2010 with a vision of creating a range of quirky illustrations. Whilst Vida is visual artist who specialises in oil paintings, Andrew is a self taught artist having worked in the building trade from leaving school.
The couple have a passion for the outdoors, nature and the countryside and it is this inspiration which has allowed the range to expand and develop over the decade. With many a chance encounter of animals and all nature has to offer whilst out exploring the great outdoors, Black Hen Designs uses vivid colour to create the hand painted glass range of images which titled often with a humourous and uplifting phrase to complete the image.
The vast range cover all types of animals in the quirky illustrations from dogs and cats, to chickens and foxes, to Robins and Goldfinch’s and is a huge part of the Irish made creative offering that The Cat and The Moon in Sligo have built there reputation on for over thirty years. Each individually crafted image begins life as a sketch and evolves into the geometrical images that are the finished piece. We are particularly fond of the Autumn Fall Fox whose image is an energetic leap into the air with all the vibrancy of the autumnal colours, its an annual favourite in an ever expanding and updated range. Black Hen Designs mount and frame every single image using 2mm plexiglass which offers a softly cast shadow over the image and the frames are a plain white wood allowing the image to speak for itself.
