The Story Behind The Cat & The Moon

The Story Behind The Cat & The Moon

Reading The Story Behind The Cat & The Moon 5 minutes

For over three decades, The Cat & The Moon has been part of the creative and cultural life of Sligo. Since opening in 1989, we've welcomed locals, visitors and generations of customers through our doors on Castle Street, sharing a love of Irish craft, design and handmade work.

The business was founded by jewellery designer Martina Hamilton, whose work is inspired by the landscape, history and traditions of the west of Ireland. What started as a jewellery studio gradually evolved into something bigger; a space where people could discover not only Martina's collections but also the work of talented makers and artists from across the country.

From the beginning, our focus has been on craftsmanship. We believe there is something special about pieces that have been carefully designed and thoughtfully made. Whether it's a piece of jewellery, a hand-thrown ceramic bowl, a woven textile or a framed print, every item in the shop has a story behind it and reflects the skill of the person who created it.

A Home for Irish Craft

One of the things we enjoy most is introducing visitors to the incredible variety of contemporary Irish craft. Ireland has a long tradition of making, and that tradition continues today through artists and makers who work in studios, workshops and small businesses throughout the country.

Over the years, we've built relationships with craftspeople whose work we admire and are proud to showcase their creations in our shop. Visitors will find jewellery, ceramics, glass, textiles, homeware, artwork and gifts, all made with care and attention to detail.

Many people who visit us are looking for something that feels genuinely connected to Ireland. Rather than mass-produced souvenirs, they want something made by hand, something with a sense of place and personality. We understand that, because it's exactly what we value ourselves.

Inspired by Sligo

It's impossible to separate The Cat & The Moon from Sligo. The landscape, the coastline, the mountains and the rich artistic heritage of the county have all influenced the business in different ways.

The name itself comes from the work of W.B. Yeats, whose connection to Sligo is woven into the identity of the town. Visitors often come to Sligo because of its literary history, but they quickly discover that creativity is still very much alive here. Artists, musicians, writers, designers and makers continue to find inspiration in this part of the world.

For us, being based in Sligo means being part of that ongoing creative tradition. The town has a strong sense of community and a vibrant arts scene, making it an ideal place for a business centred around creativity and craftsmanship.

More Than a Shop

Over the years, The Cat & The Moon has become more than simply a retail space. On the 1st floor, Hamilton Gallery host exhibitions that provide opportunities for artists to share their work with the public; also founded by Martina Hamilton.

These exhibitions bring new ideas, perspectives and conversations into the space throughout the year. Some visitors arrive expecting to browse jewellery or gifts and end up spending time exploring an exhibition they hadn't anticipated. Others return regularly to see what's new on display.

Creating a welcoming environment where people can engage with art and craft has always been an important part of what we do.

Visiting The Cat & The Moon

For visitors exploring Sligo Town, we're located in the heart of the town centre on Castle Street. Many people discover us while wandering through the town's streets, while others make a point of visiting after hearing about us from friends or family.

Some are searching for a gift to mark a special occasion. Others are looking for a keepsake from their time in Sligo. Many simply enjoy taking their time to browse and discover work that catches their eye.

Whatever brings people through our doors, we hope they leave having found something meaningful; whether that's a handcrafted piece to take home, an artist whose work they connect with, or simply a deeper appreciation for the creativity and talent that exists throughout Ireland.

Looking Ahead

While much has changed since 1989, the values that inspired The Cat & The Moon remain the same. We continue to support Irish makers, celebrate craftsmanship and create a space where people can discover beautifully made work.

As we look to the future, we're grateful to everyone who has supported us over the years; from local customers who have been with us from the beginning to visitors discovering us for the very first time.

Whether you've visited before or are planning your first trip to Sligo, we look forward to welcoming you to The Cat and The Moon.
